Otley's survival hopes hinge on West Yorkshire derby

OTLEY can all-but ensure their survival in National One with a fifth successive bonus-point victory when West Yorkshire rivals Wharfedale visit Cross Green this afternoon.

Gary Walker's young side have found form at the right time with the 20 points accumulated in the last four outings lifting them out of the bottom three to six points clear of safety.

Cinderford currently occupy the final relegation place and have two games in hand on Otley, whose season concludes today.

However, Otley could eliminate any nerves while awaiting Cinderford's finish on May 15 by matching Newbury's result at Sedgley Park today and thus ensuring survival.

"We set ourselves a target 11 games ago to make the last 12 matches a little mini-season and we have exceeded all expectations," said director of rugby Walker, who is without Howard Parr (knee) and Joe Gill (ankle) for today's derby.

"We have got to where we want to be and we've now got our fate in our own hands.

"The key has been the ability to pick from a fully-fit squad and the return to harder grounds which suits our 15-man game a lot better. Plus the younger lads have developed as the season has gone on. And our home form is up there with the best in the division – we've won 10 and drawn one – so we're pleased we're at home for this derby."

There is no such need for equations at Wharfedale, who have enjoyed an impressive season.

The Greens won their first six games and now sit sixth, with an outside chance of stealing fifth if they take all five points at Cross Green and put 50 points on their Yorkshire rivals. They would also need fifth-placed Cambridge to lose by a similar margin at Stourbridge.

Chris Malherbe, James Tincknell, Latu Maka'afi and captain Rob Baldwin all return to the starting line-up.

Doncaster can still sneak into the Championship promotion semi-finals if they earn a five-point victory against London Welsh at Castle Park today.

If Doncaster win by 15 points or gain a bonus-point victory, then a semi-final place is within reach if their achievement is matched by an Exeter victory over Nottingham.

Rotherham are already safe in the Championship but have named a strong side, including Kevin Maggs, Mike Whitehead and players' player of the year Matt Challinor, for the trip to Coventry.

It is Craig West's final game in charge of the Titans.
