Overdue win on the road for solid Sandal

SANDAL recorded their first away victory since the opening day of the season with a 25-20 success at Waterloo.

The visitors made the perfect start with a try from full-back Tom Coad. The hosts pulled back a penalty and then took the lead with a converted try on 25 minutes. However, Sandal led at half-time when winger Simon Frewin touched down in the corner.

Greg Wood added the conversion and the fly-half kicked successive penalties in the early stages of the third quarter to take it to 18-10. Waterloo stayed in touch with a kick of their own and were beginning to build momentum until Max Whittingham darted through, leaving Wood the conversion to make it 25-13.

Waterloo scored a converted try in the latter stages to grab a losing bonus point.

In what threatened to be their sternest test of the season, Harrogate produced an outstanding team performance to consolidate their position at the top of the league with a 29-3 win at Lymm.

After a sustained period of early pressure, it was a Callum Irvine penalty that put the visitors in front.

Cormack Nolan levelled for the home side, but it was only a temproary respite as it wasn’t too long before flanker Chris Wilson dived through to score a converted try.

With half-time looming, Harrogate spurned a kickable penalty and went for an attacking line-out, with Heaton benefitting from the driving maul for a converted try.

After the break, it was a similar story with the leaders maintaining their grip on the game, the increasingly impressive Noel Minikin next to go over for a fine try.

The final converted try came from still more repeated forward pressure on the home line.

Dom Musetti squeezed over from close range for his maiden Harrogate try.

Elsewhere, Bradford and Bingley were edged out 30-28 at West Hartlepool.
