Parks touched as Evans summons strength to make emotional visit to Scots

An emotional Dan Parks revealed how he and his Scotland team-mates were moved to tears as a stricken Thom Evans gave them a pre-match pep talk ahead of their Calcutta Cup draw with England.

Despite still being in the early stages of his recovery from double spinal surgery, Evans summoned the strength to pay the squad a visit on the eve of the 15-15 stalemate at Murrayfield.

There remain serious doubts over the career of the Glasgow wing, who came within a millimetre of paralysis or death in the defeat in Wales, according to older brother Max.

But Evans was determined to have some input into proceedings and Parks admitted breaking down when the 24-year-old presented him with the fly-half jersey for what was his 50th cap.

"It was a really touching moment," said Parks, who will not play with Evans again at club level if the wing does attempt a comeback, as the 31-year-old is joining Cardiff this summer.

"He's a great guy, Thommy, and I'm going to miss playing with him. It was a great occasion, very emotional, and I don't think there was a dry eye in the house.

"It was great to see him and great to see him up and about, walking around."

Parks appeared close to tears as he recalled Friday's events, adding: "For me, I felt very privileged that Thom spoke very highly of me and the friendship we have. It's very touching and something I'll never forget."

Parks, who led Scotland out onto the field to mark a half-century of Test appearances, has kept his shirt from the England game, insisting there was no chance of him parting with it.

Max Evans revealed Thom's visit meant just as much to his brother as the rest of the squad.

"It was a really special occasion," he said. "He did well to get through all he wanted to say because it was obviously very emotional and I think the boys really appreciated it."
