Paul Hanagan: I will be going flat out to clinch title hat-trick at York

THE race for the jockeys’ title could go all the way to the wire again this season with my main rival Kieren Fallon enjoying plenty of winners in the last week.

I ended a cold period with two wins at Nottingham on Wednesday and I hope to get a few more over the next two days.

There are still four weeks of the Flat season on turf to go. It could be a long month.

I ride in the opening race on Knavesmire today before heading to the Black Country for most of Wolverhampton’s evening meeting. It’s the same journey tomorrow, but I ride half-a-dozen at York on the closing day of the racecourse’s season.

I partner Passionada for North Yorkshire trainer Ollie Pears in the TSG Nursery Stakes (2pm) this afternoon. The filly won on only her second outing last time at Pontefract. She’s very good but, as always in a Knavesmire nursery, it will be a tough and competitive race. Radio Gaga, which won on her debut at Haydock Park, is the big threat. I thought the filly ran a fantastic race that day on Merseyside as I was third on another fine filly Van Der Art.

Then I jump in my car to get to Wolverhampton.

In my absence at York, I would highlight the chances of two Richard Fahey horses. They are Lisiere – a debut runner-up for me at York a month ago – in the Piper-Heidsieck National Racecourse Catering Awards EBF Maiden Stakes at 3.40pm and Blades Lad two races later in the Back A Winner By Train 25th Anniversary Stakes. The latter was runner-up on his two runs last month, and will come on for that experience.

My main chance at Wolverhampton could come in the 5.40pm race on Yeomanoftheguard. He proved on his debut at Carlisle in June – when he was third – that he’s not a straightforward ride, but I expect him to run a good race.

The other one to highlight is trainer Ed Dunlop’s Lemon Drop Red in the 7.45pm. The gelding won just over a week ago at Ffos Las, and has winning form on the all-weather at Wolverhampton.

Tomorrow afternoon sees me back at York.

My mount in the first race at 1.50pm – the Bet On Your Mobile With Coral EBF “Sakhee” Maiden Stakes – is 2012 Derby entry Mickdaam. He ran well enough on his debut when third at Newmarket, but didn’t handle the undulations of Goodwood on his reappearance. He’s been good at home at Fahey’s yard, and I like him.

I ride for Newmarket trainer David Elsworth in the Listed coral.co.uk Rockingham Stakes at 3.25pm. My colt is Swiss Spirit which won for weighing room colleague Ryan Moore on Knavesmire in June. He appreciates softer underfoot conditions – so some rain would help.

I finish my afternoon and my season at York on board the filly Astromagick for trainer Mark Tompkins in the coral.co.uk Green Tick Win More Every Race Stakes at 4.40pm. He’s a three-year-old who finally got his head in front in his last race at the seventh time of asking. That was at Yarmouth’s Eastern Festival, and he’d have a chance of following up tomorrow.

Then, once again, it’s off to Wolverhampton in the car by which time I should know if I am York’s leading jockey for the third year in a row. To achieve it I must have at least one winner over the next two days.

The standout horse of the four that I partner tomorrow evening is trainer Jeremy Noseda’s Red Alpha in the 8pm race.

Next weekend, it’s the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day at Ascot Racecourse which, at £3m in prize-money, is the richest day’s racing in Britain in the history of the sport. It’s sure to be a fantastic occasion.

The final fixtures of the 2011 Flat racing season at York are today and tomorrow, with Saturday featuring the Listed Coral Rockingham Stakes and the Coral Sprint Trophy. Further details about online booking at www.yorkracecourse.co.uk or call 01904 620911.
