Paul Hanagan reaping immediate dividends of return to Richard Fahey's North Yorkshire yard

Two wins at Newcastle on Wednesday, courtesy of Joseph Tuite’s Elusive Olivia and Mehdi for Malton’s Richard Fahey, were followed up with victory at Southwell yesterday aboard Footlight.

Like Mehdi, Footlight is trained by Fahey, the man who was instrumental in making Hanagan champion in both 2010 and 2011 before a four-year stint as retained rider to Sheikh Hamdam al Maktoum.

After losing the Hamdam role, Hanagan took most of the winter off to recuperate and move back to Yorkshire where he is expected to dominate the Flat racing circuit this year.

The Southwell meeting saw the ultra-consistent My Renaissance win for dual purpose Guiseley trainer Sam England – Jane Elliott was in the saddle.

However, luckless George Chaloner, who is attached to the Fahey yard, faces another spell on the sidelines after sustaining multiple injuries in a fall at Newcastle on Wednesday.

As a result of his mount Woodacre suffering a fatal fall, Chaloner broke a foot as well as suffering a suspected fractured vertebrae.

The jockey was having his first ride of 2017 having broken his collar bone in November and in late 2015 he broke his foot and ankle in an accident on the gallops.
