Perfect toast to 30 years in business

Wendy Hoggard declared she was thrilled with the support for the 30th birthday celebrations of her Malton-based White Rose Saddlery business at Sheriff Hutton’s point to point meeting.

Last Sunday’s fixture marked the beginning of the 2015 Yorkshire Area Point To Point season but also fulfilment of a third decade of Hoggard’s popular business.

The business was founded in 1984 by Wendy’s late husband, Chris Hoggard, a former jockey who identified a gap in the market supplying local trainers, jockeys and stable staff with their clothing and equipment. Wendy joined Chris in 1987, having completed her saddlery apprenticeship, and has been central to the company’s success ever since.

Chris sadly died aged 52 in 2009 and, six years on, White Rose Saddlery subsequently sponsored a race at Sunday’s curtain-raiser – t he Chris Hoggard Memorial Point-to-Point Club Conditions Race – a contest that was so well supported by 18 runners that it needed splitting into separate divisions.

Fureys Bar and jockey Jack Teal took division one with the Gillon Crow-ridden Cottage Oak bagging division two on a card lit up by the victory of former Cheltenham Festival and Royal Ascot winner Junior for trainer Nicky Tinkler and jockey Richard Smith.

A proud Hoggard beamed afterwards: “We were delighted our sponsored race was so well supported with so many runners that it needed dividing.

“As our local point to point, it is a fitting way to celebrate 30 years of business and it’s especially good to see so many of our friends and clients riding and training winners.”
