Phoenix double up against Barnsley

After conceding an early penalty, Doncaster Phoenix took control to win 36-8 against Barnsley at Castle Park, which also doubled up as a Yorkshire Shield tie.

Andrew Appleyard kicked Barnsley into an early lead, but Phoenix went ahead with two first-half tries by winger Ben Atkinson. Full-back Ben Miller converted one and added a penalty to put them 15-3 clear at half-time.

They stretched their lead with further tries by Miller and flankers John Ball and Henry Taylor, with Miller (two) and scrum-half Joe Watts kicking the conversions. Barnsley had the final word with an 80th-minute try by centre Tom Gray.

Bottom-club Goole, after going for 15 games without a win, scored their second successive victory with a 13-8 home verdict against mid-table Huddersfield YMCA.

From being 8-3 down, Goole struck back with a try by scrum-half Chris Hancox, which Mick Stoakes converted to add to his second penalty.

Leaders North Ribblesdale won 14-6 at Hullensians, with flanker Michael Carr touching down and centre Steve Moon kicking three penalties.
