Plenty more to come, says England hero Brown

Mike Brown says he relished being back in his more accustomed position of full-back and warned England’s future opponents that the best is yet to come from Stuart Lancaster’s side.

The Harlequins flier put in a man-of-the-match performance on his return to the No 15 shirt as England beat Australia for the first time under Lancaster.

His ability under the high ball, his kicking from deep and his all-round defence saw him excel in what was a largely workmanlike performance from England.

It was his counter-attack from his own goal line that got Twickenham to its feet 10 minutes into the second half, and sparked England’s revival.

He said: “It was good to get the win, but there’s still a lot to work on.

“There were quite a few errors. We didn’t get our continuity going as we would have liked, but we got the win. Hopefully, now we can carry that forward.

“The encouraging thing is there’s so much more to come from this group.

“We’re confident in our abilities. Now it’s up to us to back this up.

“Last year we didn’t quite do that in the autumn series, so this time around it’s great to start the series with a win. The thing we need to do now is work hard on the training field and build on it.”

Brown has been used on the wing for some of Lancaster’s reign, with Ben Foden the preferred full-back.

But even though players like scrum-half Lee Dickson have got the nod for their form for Northampton, over players like fellow No 9 Danny Care at Harlequins, Brown has been able to rise above the pack.

His performance on Saturday could prove a benchmark for that position.

“No 15 is where I like to play but just playing in the white shirt is a dream come true, especially in front of a packed house,” said Brown. “I learnt so much playing on the wing but it was nice to get a run at full-back and do the job.”

Captain Chris Robshaw added: “A lot of us in this group had never beaten Australia before, myself included. It’s a great memento for us.”
