Pontypridd 18 Leeds Carnegie 7: Sodden Leeds left with nothing

Leeds Carnegie’s interest in the British & Irish Cup had ended before a ball was touched at Pontypridd’s antiquated Sardis Road ground because of a combination of results elsewhere.

Against a stronger and more experienced Welsh outfit, Leeds struggled to deal with the pace of the game in the first half, but then produced a much stronger showing after the break.

The finally scoreline was a harsh reflection on Diccon Edwards’s side because of the determination they showed throughout on a horrible, sodden night.

Pontypridd struck at the beginning and end of the first half, although there was more than an element of doubt for their first try through Dan Godfrey.

Leeds produced some good passages but were unable to turn pressure into points. As it was, the home side struck on the stroke of half-time when Matthew Nuthall scored out wide.

Nuthall grabbed a second after the break but the half was a more even affair. Leeds finally gained a consolation with the last play of the game when Curtis Wilson went 50 metres to score.
