Poomjaeng’s maximum high

Sheffield-based Dechawat Poomjaeng scored his first official maximum 147 break in yesterday’s German Masters qualifiers in Barnsley.

The 35-year-old former World Amateur champion – known on the circuit as Jack – completed the maximum in the fourth frame of his qualifying match against Zak Surety at the Barnsley Metrodome on his way to a 5-3 win.

The world No 60’s 147 is the 101st in snooker history following Mark Selby’s landmark maximum at the UK Championship in York last Saturday.

Unlike Selby’s £59,000 bonus though, Poomjaeng will pick up just £2,500 for his feat providing nobody else scores a 147 today when qualifying continues.

Two other players based at the Star Academy in Sheffield also reached the finals. India’s Aditya Mehta thrashed China’s Li Yan 5-0, while world No 3 Ding Junhui beat Kyren Wilson 5-3.

Sheffield rookie Joel Walker enjoyed a shock 5-0 win over world No 13 Robert Milkins, while joining him in the finals in Berlin next month is Leeds’s Peter Lines who edged a tight match with Martin O’Donnell 5-4. Pickering’s Paul Davison beat Jamie Jones 5-3.

But there was an early exit for Sheffield’s Adam Duffy, who lost 5-2 to Hong Kong’s Marco Fu. Leeds amateur Sanderson Lam lost 5-3 against Judd Trump, while Sheffield amateur Mitchell Travis was beaten 5-1 by Rod Lawler.
