Prince reigns supreme as Lancashire triumph

cb 40 league reviewAshwell Prince hit an unbeaten century as Lancashire made light work of a target of 272 to claim a seven-wicket Clydesdale Bank 40 Group A win over Glamorgan.

Tom Maynard had also recorded three figures as the Dragons reached 271-4 in their 40 overs.

The youngster smashed 103 not out from 68 balls and openers Mark Cosgrove (50) and Jim Allenby (40) also contributed well as Stephen Parry took 2-41.

It looked a testing total, particularly when an opening stand of 66 between Tom Smith (33) and Paul Horton (29) gave way to

89-3.

But Prince made an unbeaten 102 from 82 balls and Stephen Croft hit 84 not out from 70 to see the Red Rose to 275-3 with 2.4 overs to spare.

Warwickshire eased to a 41-run win over Leicestershire under the Duckworth-Lewis method in Group C, aided by explosive batting displays from new-ball pair Neil Carter and Chris Woakes.

Carter kick-started the Bears' innings with 68 from 38 balls and, after Ian Bell added a stylish 72 from 58, Woakes lifted his side to 321-7 with an astounding late blitz of 49 not out from just 16 deliveries – half of which were dispatched to the boundary.

Foxes prospect James Taylor made a superb 92 from 77 balls, but his side were 235-7 from 34.1 overs when play was ended by bad light.

Elsewhere in the same group, New signing Steven Mullaney took three quick wickets to rip the heart out of the Hampshire batting and set up a convincing 35-run win for Nottinghamshire at the Rose Bowl.

Mullaney, signed from Lancashire in the close season, finished with 3-24 as Hampshire's poor start to the season continued. Hampshire have now lost all five matches in both competitions and there was never any doubt they would lose this encounter after overnight rain and persistent drizzle reduced the match to 24 overs each.

Home captain Nic Pothas chose to field first and his decision was immediately called into question as second-wicket pairing Hashim Amla and Alex Hales put on 69 in only eight overs.

Veteran former England all-rounder Dominic Cork put a break on the scoring by taking three wickets in 10 balls – removing Amla for 33, Hales for 41 and then Mullaney for nine to a catch at the wicket.

But Hampshire struggled to build on their successes with Chris Read and Paul Franks putting on 48 for the sixth wicket to build a formidable total of 180-7 from their 24 overs.

The hosts never really looked like reaching their target. Openers Michael Carberry and Jimmy Adams put on 43 in 41 balls for the first wicket with the latter striking two fours and two sixes in his aggressive 29.
