Promising times Down Under for British pair

Great Britain’s Jamie Baker is through to the second round of Australian Open qualifying following a straight sets victory over Julio Cesar Campozano.

The world No 246 triumphed 6-3 7-5 over the Ecuadorian in one hour and 32 minutes on court 14.

Baker put in a solid performance, making just one unforced error against an opponent who, before this contest, was ranked 24 places higher than the 26-year-old Briton.

Baker will take on the winner of Matwe Middelkoop and 19th seed Matteo Viola.

James Ward joined his compatriot in the second round with a straight-sets victory over Boris Pashanski of Serbia, the British 
No 4, winning 6-4 6-3 in one hour 12 minutes.

n Top seed Agnieszka Radwanska gained revenge for her US Open defeat to Roberta Vinci with a straight-sets victory over the Italian in the quarter-final of the Apia International in Sydney.

The world No 4, from Poland, clinched a 6-4 7-5 win in one hour 34 minutes. Radwanska was knocked out of the US Open in the fourth round by Vinci last year.

Second seed Angelique Kerber made it through to the last four thanks to a 6-3 7-5 success over Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova.
