Pulling together for England

The strain shows on the faces of some of the England B pullers in the UK indoor tug of war championships at Huddersfield Sports Centre.

Teams from Scotland and Northern Ireland also took part in the event on Saturday organised by the English Tug of War Association. England A triumphed in the 600-kilo category, while Scotland A clinched the 680-kilo competition.

Although some of the biggest competitors can weigh up to 16 stones, organisers say people of any size and shape can take part.

The sport was formerly a part of the Olympic programme until 1920, but was phased out along with other sports, including cricket and rugby, to reduce the number of competitors at the Olympics at that time. As a result Great Britain is still the reigning Olympic champion from the 1920 Games. (GL1001/83c)
