Puncture puts paid to Dawson’s hopes of landing Ripon victory

YORKSHIRE time trial ace Kevin Dawson, the Sportscover-Strategic rider from Blaxton near Doncaster, put in a fine performance but narrowly missed out on a spot on the podium at the National 100-Mile Championships, near Ripon, in North Yorkshire on Saturday.

Dawson, who has won the national title seven times and is the reigning national record holder, covered the course in 3hr 35min 43sec, but it was only enough for fourth spot.

Earlier in the race Dawson had looked set for second place, but at two-thirds of the way through, he punctured his tyre on roads which had been left littered with debris following heavy rain and hail.

He changed his wheel and quickly got back on his way, but was unable to get his title bid back on track.

London-based Irishman Michael Hutchinson (Quickvit) was the eventual winner in 3.24.45, to record his sixth victory in the title race, while another Londoner, Rebecca Slack (The Altitude Centre) mastered the course to take home the women’s title.

Other Yorkshire riders who rode well included Joel Wainman, the Team Swift rider from Hull, who clocked 3.40.09 to take ninth, while his team-mate Carl Ruebotham was 14th with 3.45.20.

Elsewhere, Scunthorpe Poly CC’s Anthony Nash won the Rockingham CC 25-mile event at Five Lane Ends near Worksop on Saturday, the 46-year-old covering the course in 51min 19sec.

He held off Ferryhill Wheelers’ Keith Murray by just two seconds, while Pendle Forest CC’s Jason Bateman was third, around 1-30 behind.

And earlier in the week, Joel Wainman won his club’s 10-mile time trial.

He set a time of 19min 17sec to win by 31 seconds from Planet X rider Lee Tunnicliffe.
