Ribblesdale settle in to new division

Last season's Yorkshire Two champions North Ribblesdale got their campaign off to the best possible start with a 27-19 home victory over Heath, now in their fourth season in Yorkshire One.

Ribblesdale led only 5-0 at the turnround, but they kept the upper hand despite Heath coming back strongly with tries from David Montgomery, Matthew Hallett and Oliver Wilby. Darren Fermoyle and Giles Hetherington kicked conversions.

Ribblesdale's try scorers were full back Simon Chapman, stand-off Steve Moon and winger Simon Bolland as well as a penalty try.

Knottingley, promoted with Ribblesdale from Yorkshire Two, scored the only two tries of the match in a 21-6 home victory over Keighley.

Dave Evans, the Knottingley full back, landed a penalty and drop goal to the first of Alex Brown's two penalty goals for the visitors to put the home side 6-3 ahead at the turnround.

Stand-off Steve Rockett scored an interception try, converted by Evans, and winger Brad Rawlinson ran in another to put Knottingley in control.

Selby came out on top in their clash with Castleford, winning 26-12. Scrum-half Matt Smith scored their opening try, converted by debutant Sam Morgan, and Morgan went on to convert other tries from winger Ben Lunt and centre Alex Webster, while Smith added a second try. Full back Chris Brown converted a penalty try and No 8 Chris Willets added another for Cas, but it was not enough.

Ilkley, relegated from North One East at the end of last season, ran in three tries to two but were defeated 24-18 in their match at Malton and Norton.

Malton turned round 11-8 in front, winger Henry Newitt scoring a try and Teei Piawi kicking two penalty goals to a try by winger Rich Greenfield and a penalty from Peter Shanks for the visitors. Ilkley edged into a 13-11 lead with the first of two tries by No 8 Hamish Pratt just after the break, but a converted try from prop Adam Turnbull and two more Piawi penalties put Malton back in control.

Dinnington ran in the only two tries of the first half but were edged out 21-19 on their visit to Scarborough.

Sheffield ran in five tries on their way to a 41-6 win over Bridlington, with Alex Hill scoring twice and Matt Poste and Ali Womack adding the others.
