Rio 2016: Andrew Triggs-Hodge named in Team GB rowing squad for fourth Olympics

Triggs-Hodge was named as one of three Yorkshire rowers in the Great Britain squad for this summer’s Games.

Leeds’ Paul Bennett joins the 37-year-old in a list of 12 rowers set to race in the men’s eight boat and men’s pair including two reserves.

Richmond’s Zoe Lee will stroke the women’s eight boat in her first Olympic Games and will be joined by four-time Olympian Frances Houghton.

The British women’s eight will go into the competition as favourites to medal after winning world silver and European gold over the last 12 months.

British rowing announced 43 members of their 47 squad on Thursday but left London 2012 gold medallist Katherine Grainger waiting to find out whether she will compete in the women’s double scull.

Triggs-Hodge has won gold medals in the men’s four at the last two Olympic Games but his preparation for Rio was hit by an 18-month absence from the sport through illness.

The Grassington rower returned to the British training squad over the winter and was in the boat that finished a disappointing fourth at the World Cup event in Lucerne last month.

Former junior world champion Jess Leyden, from Todmorden, will have to watch the Rio Games from afar after she was unable to help the British quad qualify a place at the final qualification regatta.

Olympic champions Helen Glover and Heather Stanning headline the squad as they return to defend their title in the women’s pair while Alex Gregory will also look to defend his men’s four gold from London 2012 – this time alongside Mohamed Sbihi, George Nash and Constantine Louloudis.

Olympic lightweight women’s double scull champion Katherine Copeland will also seek to defend her crown alongside Olympic debutante Charlotte Taylor.
