Rio 2016: Huddersfield's Marcus Ellis is unlikely medal contender

BEFORE THE Olympics, few would have backed Huddersfield's Marcus Ellis and Chris Langridge to make the final four of the badminton men's doubles.

But with the pressure off their shoulders, the duo are on a fairytale run that could take them all the way to a medal – according to Ellis.

On Monday the duo – ranked 22 in the world – took down Japan’s Hiroyuki Endo and Kenichi Hayakawa 21-19, 21-17 in the quarter-finals.

The Japanese duo are No.8 in the world but were powerless to stop the British pair who are loving every minute of their knockout experience.

While the duo are the back-to-back British champions, they have never been beyond the last eight at the world championships so are now sailing in unchartered territory.

But with fourth seeds Haifeng Fu and Nan Zhang of China awaiting them in the semi-finals, Ellis sees no reason to change their approach.

“When we got through the group stage it was pressure off because everyone we play now we know the pressure is just piled on them,” he said.

“I was not even remotely nervous walking on court because I knew the weight of the world was on their shoulders which is a great place to be.

“We are looking forward to the semi-final and we need to carry that on – they will be expected to win, they have got to win, and we have literally got nothing to lose.”

The duo only joined forced two years ago but have gelled quickly as a pairing – earlier this year they won bronze at the European Championships.

And Ellis admits the pairing has meshed quicker than he could ever have expected.

“Sometimes in doubles you have to work to get cohesion but when Chris and I started playing together we just clicked – we sort of fell into our roles and both knew what the other was doing,” he added.

“That just kind of happened, it was natural. And that is such a big advantage because when it comes down to pressure points – like every single one is here at the Olympics – it really pays off and shows.”

And Ellis’ partner Langridge is hoping he and his partner can ‘do a Leicester’ and continue their shock run in the semis.

“It’s insane really – if you had told me before the start that we would make the semi-finals I would have bitten your hand off,” he said.

“Our record against the Chinese pair is not as good as we would like but the thing is, this is the Olympics and anything can happen.

“We are going to go out there and see what happens and hopefully do a Leicester.”
