Ripon underline their potential

Yorkshire Shield: Ripon reached the third round when they beat higher-placed North Ribblesdale 26-19.

Yorkshire Two side Ripon had a penalty try awarded and centre Rob Harrison scored two tries and Patrick Whittaker kicked a conversion and three penalties.

Yorkshire One outfit North Ribblesdale were also handed a penalty try, while others came from winger Matt Dakin and debutant winger Chris Briggs, while Stephen Moon kicked two conversions. But it was not enough to avoid defeat.

The leaders of Yorkshire Two, Huddersfield YMCA claimed the scalp of Yorkshire One promotion contenders Heath, winning 37-30 in the second round. YMCA were 20-11 ahead and although Heath outscored them after the break YMCA held on.

James Swift kicked six penalties, two conversions and scored a try, and other tries came from Adam Ryder and Stewart Morton.

For Heath, Giles Hetherington scored twice, Ollie Collins and Neil Francis also claimed tries, and Matthew Hallett kicked two penalties and a conversion, and Simon Brown added a penalty.

A penalty from Mark Shires in extra-time was enough for Moortown to claim a tense 17-14 victory over West Leeds. Winger Keith Moxey touched down, and Shires had already added three penalties before his winning kick late in the game.

York battled from behind to beat Pocklington 27-21 in their derby. After Alex Nixon had scored an early breakaway try for York, the rest of the half belonged to Pocklington with winger Dan Pickard and full-back Nick Bennett scoring tries, Bennett also kicking a conversion and penalty. But York hit back after half-time with tries from Nixon, winger Billy Cacaunitabua, and Cawthorn adding both conversions. Bennett added a penalty for Pocklington, but Nixon's late breakaway try sealed the win.

Yorkshire One leaders Malton and Norton beat Bridlington 60-0, full-back Tommy Newitt scoring a hat-trick while replacement centre Ryan Lonsdale scored two. Others came from scrum-half Tom Collard, centre Tony Maka, prop Liam Vaughan and fly-half Tom Grivell, who also kicked six conversions and a penalty.
