Rising stars Gill and Hewitt take top marks at college

The event attracted juniors from all over the country to the college near Beverley for three days of competition.

Sixteen-year-old Gill won the newcomer second round on Noahs Lady, who beat off 58 others, and Hewitt emerged triumphant, riding Wonder Boy, out of 40 combinations competing in the Foxhunter second round.

First prize in the Pony Showjumper of The Year competition was shared between North Humberside’s Charlie Dawson, riding Destavelars Misty, and Abbie Bevan, riding Forthview Master.

Eighteen starters were bidding for glory.

Out of 30 starters in the HOYS 128cm qualifier, victory went to Mya Roxburgh, on Styx Evo VIII.

Fifty-eight starters took part in the HOYS 138cm qualifier, which went to Lancashire’s Drew Walton, on My Bugsy Malone. The event attracted 344 ponies with 789 entries.

Bishop Burton College also staged Para Dressage at the CPEDI with Paralympic gold medallist Natasha Baker, Ashleigh Jones, Natasha Tse and Amy Willmot winning their respective classes. Baker was also announced as one of the para dressage team members for the World Equestrian Games.

There were 27 competitors for the CPEDI; 23 British, one Greek and three from Hong Kong.

Baker was the highest-placed CPEDI two-star rider on Sookie St James with 70.78 per cent.

The highest placed junior rider was Lydia Aucott on Ragtime with 64.05 per cent while the highest placed young rider was Ashleigh Jones on Bongo Bong on 71.17 per cent. The highest placed overseas rider was Sophie Milner, of Hong Kong, with 63.07 per cent.

The Para Dressage Training Trust provided training bursaries to the two highest placed riders, 18 years and under, in Lydia Aucott and Ashleigh Jones.

Saturday’s music tests were won by Fiona Maynard, who bagged the two-star Grade IV on WS Legolas with 73.25 per cent, and Georgia Wilson, who took the two-star Grade III with Avanti, who scored 68.17 per cent.

Baker was also victorious in the two-star Grade II event with the 75.67 per cent scored by Sookie St James. The two-star Grade Ib went to Amy Wilmot and Woodlands Boy with 72.42 per cent.

Ashleigh Jones and Bongo Bong won the Young Rider Grade II and Grade III went to Katherine Cooksley with ROh-Gold. Lydia Aucott and Ragtime won the junior rider Grade III event.
