Robson and O'Brien miss out in qualifiers on US Open chance

Laura Robson suffered a qualifying collapse for the second year in succession as her hopes of playing in the US Open ended at Flushing Meadows yesterday.

Robson led Spain's Nuria Llagostera Vives 3-1 in the deciding set of their final qualifying round match, only to lose the next five games in a row to slide to a 6-2 4-6 3-6 defeat.

It was eerily reminiscent of 12 months ago when the 16-year-old Briton lost at the same stage to Eva Hrdinova of the Czech Republic despite leading 4-1 in the final set. Former junior Wimbledon champion Robson bounced back from losing her serve in the opening game of the match to take the opening set

6-2, but dropped her serve three times as Llagostera Vives levelled the match.

Llagostera Vives was once ranked as high as 35th in the world and has won two titles on the WTA Tour, the 30-year-old using all her experience to break Robson's rhythm once she fell

3-1 behind in the decider.

On several occasions the Spaniard was still towelling herself down at the back of the court when Robson was ready to serve, and the teenager failed to cope with the display of gamesmanship.

From 3-1 ahead she lost her serve three times in succession to tamely surrender her chance to become the youngest

British qualifier in Grand Slam history.

Also out is compatriot Katie O'Brien, who missed out on a place in the main draw after losing her final qualifying match to Ukraine's Olga Savchuk in three sets.

Beverley's O'Brien came back from a set and 3-1 down to level the match, but then lost the decider 6-1.
