Rotherham United given green light for new 12,000-seater stadium

ROTHERHAM UNITED are to move into a new purpose-built, 12,000-seater stadium in two years time after identifying a site in the town centre.

The new stadium will be built on the old Guest and Chrimes Foundry site near the River Don.

It will be owned by the Millers and has the capacity to expand to 16,000 seats if needed.

At a meeting today with the local council, the club acquired the land and plan to commence work when planning permission is granted.

Since leaving Millmoor in 2008, the club have been playing across the border in Sheffield at the Don Valley Stadium.

Chairman Tony Stewart said: "We are all very excited after 18 months of negotiations, mixed with disappointment, but we have now got what we feel is the best deal for Rotherham United."
