DRIFFIELD's torrid season continued when they suffered this defeat at North East rivals and league leaders Percy Park.

The East Yorkshire side defended well, but could not break through a strong home defence.

Just 3-0 down at the break following a 35th-minute penalty from Ashley Smith for the home side, Driffield's director of rugby Patrick Burdass said: "It was an even first half and we were still very much in it and competing well. There was nothing to choose between the two sides.

"But after the break Percy Park slowly started to get on top and we lacked a cutting edge and never really looked like scoring. Percy Park looked sharper out wide and that was the only real difference between us."

Percy Park extended their lead just 10 minutes into the second period with stand-off Martin Shaw touching down and Smith converting, and with 20 minutes left replacement centre Brett Sylph scored wide out to complete the scoring.

Cleckheaton 12

Cleckheaton saw four points plucked from their grasp as a

last-minute drop-goal from Hartlepool earned them the win.

Tries from Rich Piper and Ed Chappelow had moved Cleckheaton into position for victory.

But they were stung at the finish as the Rovers fly-half moved into the pocket to kick the three-pointer and leave Cleakheaton with a losing bonus point.

The games involving Wheatley Hills, Old Brodelians, Old Crossleyans and Pontefract were all postponed.
