Ability to refine game possible as England eye final return

CARL ABLETT admits England must improve their “quality and composure” if they are going to push on and win the World Cup.

The Leeds Rhinos utility came off the bench as the national side failed to overcome favourites Australia in Saturday’s World Cup Group A opener.

Ablett admits they were left deeply frustrated having opened up a 10-0 lead and then seen their advantage slip away to lose 28-20.

But he retains the belief England can refine their game sufficiently to reverse that if they meet again in the final at the end of next month.

“We were in control for the first 20 minutes but then let in a few soft tries,” he said.

“They turned the screw like they can do and we were chasing the game a little bit so that’s disappointing.

“I think we did a pretty good job to get back into the game and there was not much in it.

“We just lacked a little bit of composure and quality at the end and that’s probably let us down.

“But there were some encouraging signs and we’ll get back to working hard and preparing for Ireland this week.

“It’s not over. It’s the first game. I’m sure we’re going to get better and the more games we spend together the better we’ll get.

“Hopefully, if we get to play them again we’ll be better for it.”

They will have to do it the hard way and probably beat holders New Zealand in the semi-finals to set up a re-match with the Kangaroos in the final.

On the prospect of facing the Kiwis in the last four, Ablett added: “We play who we play.

“If we build on that performance – there was only eight points in it so we’re not a million miles away – then we should be peaking for those games.

“We’ve a few blokes to come back in, some who missed out, and they will be putting pressure on so we’ll get better.”

The back-row will hope to retain his place for Saturday’s game against Ireland at Huddersfield.

Wigan Warriors loose forward Sean O’Loughlin should return from injury, but he will likely be a straight replacement for Sam Burgess, who was yesterday hit with a one-match ban for a high tackle on Australia’s Sam Thaiday.

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats hooker Paul Aiton will miss Papua New Guinea’s match against Samoa at Hull KR next Monday.

He received a one-match ban for a high tackle on Morgan Escare in their 9-8 French loss.
