Anderson left embarrassed as Giants wilt against ruthless Wigan in play-off opener

The West Yorkshire club, who had beaten Wigan twice in the regular season, were utterly destroyed by the reigning champions.

They will get another opportunity to progress to Super League’s semi-finals when they host the victors of either Leeds Rhinos v Catalan Dragons or Warrington Wolves v Widnes Vikings next Thursday or Friday.

But first they have some serious questions to answer when they reconvene for today’s review of last night’s debacle.

“It was embarrassing,” admitted Anderson, who still hopes to lead Huddersfield to a maiden Grand Final.

“We dipped our toe in the water tonight and that’s what happens when you do that in the play-offs.

“It was not to our liking. Wigan were physically too big and too strong for us. If I’m honest, we turned it in.”

Huddersfield were without captain Danny Brough but Anderson insisted: “As good a player as he is, I don’t think Broughy would have helped out there tonight.

“All being well he’ll be available for our next game.”

Anderson tried to put his finger on why things went so awry as they were completely dominated by the Super League favourites.

“When emotion gets involved people try solving things themselves,” he said. “They don’t stick to structures that they’ve practiced for years and years.

“We’re still just two games away from a Grand Final and they have to rock up tomorrow and be honest at our video session.

“I’m going to name my team on Sunday and if they don’t like it, that’s just tough.”
