Anderson still targetting top spot for Giants

They were 38-16 victors yesterday, a result that sees the 2013 League Leaders’ Shield winners draw level with Warrington Wolves in fifth.

With second-placed Wigan Warriors dropping a place after a shock defeat at relegated Bradford Bulls yesterday, the jostling for positions is heating up with just five rounds remaining.

Just six points separate sixth-placed Huddersfield and leaders St Helens and Anderson said: “We still want to finish top. We’ve got some good games coming up – Warrington, Saints, Widnes – and we’re at Wakefield next week, who know if they win that they’ll be pushing for the eight again too.

“I’m not going to say we were brilliant today, but the effort and endeavour was good and many times I’ve sat here and questioned that.”

The performance certainly helped atone for the 30-16 defeat in France in March when Huddersfield were bullied before a late rally brought some respectability.

The only downside yesterday was the loss of impressive hooker Kyle Wood to a knee injury.

“He’s in a brace, on crutches and will be scanned Monday,” confirmed Anderson, who says missing England centre Leroy Cudjoe is unlikely to return until the Widnes game on August 17 due to a quad issue.

“When Woody goes down stepping like that and there’s no one around him it’s never good,” added Anderson.
