Barrow Raiders 62 Keighley Cougars 18: Cougars victim of Barrow blitz

KEIGHLEY COUGARS were taught a real lesson in finishing as Barrow Raiders ran in 11 tries to reach the last eight of the Northern Rail Cup.

The Cougars, already qualified for the quarter-finals, were lethargic in defence and only sparked in attack in the last quarter, by which time the result was beyond doubt.

Liam Harrison, Michael Knowles and Rob Roberts crossed for the hosts in the first 20 minutes to give them an 18-0 lead.

Andy Ballard and Harrison again added to the tally before winger Chris Larkin went through some sloppy tackling for a brace as the Championship Grand Final winners went 40-0 up after only half-an-hour.

John Presley scored a try on the back of a scrum on the Barrow 10-metre line to pull six points back before the break.

But there was more of the same from the home side after the interval as Jamie Rooney, Nathan Mossop and Harrison for his hat-trick put them 56-6 in front and cruising.

Barrow now started to let up and the Cougars started to play their best rugby, Danny Jones going in after a kick over the top by Daley Williams.

Full-back George Rayner added another for Keighley as he found a big hole in the Barrow defence before Brett McDermott rounded off the win for the hosts as he stretched over beneath the posts.
