Brough setting his sights on leading Giants to trophy glory

NEW signing Danny Brough expects Huddersfield Giants to win the Challenge Cup or Super League title this season.

The enigmatic scrum-half finally sealed his move from Wakefield Trinity yesterday after signing a four-and-half year deal at the Galpharm Stadium.

In return, Wakefield, who knew their goal-kicking star could leave for free at the end of the season, have received a cash sum, extended prop Michael Korkidas's loan from the Giants until the end of 2011 and taken Huddersfield's highly-talented utility player Danny Kirmond on loan for the remainder of the current campaign.

The Giants have worked furiously to bring Brough on board, coach Nathan Brown ending a 12-month long quest to secure the gifted playmaker, seeing off late interest from Catalans and some troubled negotiations between the Yorkshire clubs to land the talented 27-year-old.

"I've admired Danny's game since I came to the UK," said the Australian. "Out-and-out half-backs with outstanding kicking games and genuine speed are becoming a rarity; we think he can definitely improve our team."

With last season's Challenge Cup runners-up again pushing hard in Super League – Huddersfield lie third – former York, Castleford and Hull FC star Brough believes they will push for silverware. "We should be aiming for the top two and I'd like to think we'd win one of the two trophies this year," he said.

"I'm just over the moon to be here now rather than later. The deal's been on and it's been off again – I wasn't sure what was happening a few days ago – but I'm just glad it's done and I can get playing again.

"Wakefield have been great to me and my family over the last three years but I was ready for this."

Brough knows he is unlikely to be automatically guaranteed a spot, adding: "The two half-backs – Luke Robinson and Kev Brown – have been playing great but I came to fight for a place and improve."

Brough is expected to debut against St Helens at the Galpharm on Sunday while Brown insisted the long-term future of former Featherstone player

Kirmond, who could return from a knee reconstruction in Wakefield colours at Warrington tomorrow night, remains firmly with Huddersfield.

Bradford entertain Harlequins at Odsal tomorrow with chairman Peter Hood insisting plans to redevelop their stadium will still go ahead albeit possibly on a smaller scale.

A decision to freeze funding for a major campus refurbishment at Bradford College – one of six partners involved – is threatening to reduce the cash available to realise the original 75.5m Odsal Sports Village project.

Hood admits it can only be delivered on time with the aid of private sector involvement but says there are alternative plans for six scaled-down schemes costing between 20m and 40m.

Castleford have signed back-row Chris Tuson, 20, from Wigan on a month's loan and Leeds could play former Salford prop Luke Ambler at Wigan tomorrow.
