Brown puts Giants on their guard after taming Swinton

Despite coasting to this win at the Galpharm to reach the last eight, Brown insisted Huddersfield will need to be on their guard whoever they are paired against in tomorrow’s quarter-final draw.

He said: “Batley have nearly caused an upset, Featherstone caused one and nearly caused another one, which is one of the great things about the cup, it’s what happens on the day.I’m sure everyone will be talking about Leigh now because they’re the only Championship side left.

“Whoever they get will be wary because the Super League is so different to the Challenge Cup where anything can happen.

“The key to the Challenge Cup is just staying alive. If you could control the draw there might be one or two sides everyone might favour getting but you’ve got to play well.”

Hooker David Faiumu scored one and made another on his 100th appearance for the Giants.

The former North Queensland Cowboys star collected Luke O’Donnell’s rollback near the Swinton tryline on 12 minutes and darted over to help put the home side 12-0 up.

Danny Brough, who had earlier put the Giants in front with a solo score that he converted himself, added the extras in torrential rain at the Galpharm Stadium.

Swinton started well. They had a lot of pressure near the Huddersfield tryline early on before Brough opened the floodgates.

Faiumu set up Lee Gilmour for a touchdown on 15 minutes, just after Leroy Cudjoe blew a chance to score by passing to the marked Scott Grix when he could have gone for it alone.

But Huddersfield did not have things all their own way. Winger Aaron Murphy stopped Swinton’s Kevin Penny going through after a breakaway by Martin Ainscough on 20 minutes.

A pass from O’Donnell was then intercepted on 23 minutes by Swinton’s Darren Hawkyard, whose solo break from deep was halted by Brough.

Huddersfield hit back to lead 34-0 at the break through three quick tries. Joe Wardle started it by setting up Greg Eden for the first of his two efforts on 30 minutes.

Jason Chan then took on Cudjoe’s pass on the right wing and went the long way around the Swinton defence on a dazzling solo run that finished near the opposite corner.

That was on 34 minutes and soon after Scott Grix, when there seemed to be nothing on, spotted a small gap in the Lions’ defence and burst through for a try.

Brough hit three more conversions before the break and was on target again on 44 minutes after Eden added his second try of the afternoon.

Swinton’s Ian Mort thought he had scored a consolation soon after, but referee Tim Roby ruled the final pass to him by Sam Reay had gone forward.

It prompted Swinton’s best spell of the match, a sustained 15-minute assault on the Giants’ tryline which the Super League leaders powerfully resisted.

Huddersfield substitute Jamie Cording then completed a nine-try romp with two quick tries late on.

He first went over unchallenged from Luke Robinson’s pass on 69 minutes.

Cording then touched down from Aaron Murphy’s set-up eight minutes later, with Brough twice converting to finish with a 20-point haul from eight successful goal kicks and a try.
