Brown retains faith in Giants but is aware of Widnes’s home form

HUDDERSFIELD Giants coach Nathan Brown will send his misfiring side out at Widnes Vikings tomorrow reminding them there is no need for panic.

However, if ever they needed a trip to Super League’s bottom club this is the occasion as the West Yorkshire club aim to avoid a fourth successive defeat.

Huddersfield’s slump, anchored by last Sunday’s unexpected loss against Salford City Reds, has seen them slip away from the summit but Brown insists they are not in freefall.

“We have gone through a stage where we haven’t won for a period but it’s not like anyone should be down on confidence,” he said.

“We have lost two games previous to last weekend; one to Catalan where the lead changes six times and we had three disallowed ‘tries’ and we were not very far away, and then we lost to Wigan.

“It was quite an exciting game until the back end where they were too good for us.

“Salford has been the toughest review for a while and now we just need to move forward.”

Widnes have secured just two wins all season but have shown their intent for 2013 with the signing of Huddersfield captain Kevin Brown.

He is suspended for the Giants tomorrow but Scott Moore, sacked by Widnes earlier this season, will make a return to his recent employers.

It is Huddersfield’s first taste of the much-maligned artificial surface and Brown said: “It will be a fast pitch, a good track.

“We have just got to go and put in a good performance as they are definitely a better team at home. They have had two wins there and nearly beat Catalan. That seems to be where they play their best football, on that surface.

“But it doesn’t matter who we are playing. We just need to get ourselves heading in the right direction again.”

Brown can make changes with rested trio Lee Gilmour, Larne Patrick and Aaron Murphy all ready to return while young second-row Jacob Fairbank is ready to make his first appearance in almost three months after recovering from a broken wrist.

This may only be the tyro forward’s breakthrough season but Brown already values his importance.

“Bob was playing so well at the start of the season and he does those things well that we haven’t done for the past few weeks,” said the Australian.
