Buderus ban provides Leeds with new play-off hurdle

LEEDS RHINOS suffered another blow to their hopes of retaining their Super League crown last night when hooker Danny Buderus was banned for their play-off semi-final on Saturday week.

At the same time, Hull KR coach Justin Morgan expressed his surprise that Wigan forward Joel Tomkins has also not been suspended by the RFL disciplinary committee against his team in Friday's elimination semi-final.

Former Newcastle Knights and Australia player Buderus was given a one-match suspension for a "spear" tackle on Paul Prescott in Sunday's play-off win over Wigan at the DW Stadium.

Buderus, who has missed only four of his side's 34 matches this season, was put on report for the challenge and was found guilty of a grade A offence when he appeared before the league's disciplinary committee last night.

Leeds' 27-26 victory over the League leaders has come at a heavy price, with stand-off Danny McGuire picking up a season-ending knee injury in the same match.

Tomkins was penalised for kicking out at McGuire but was later only issued with a caution by the RFL.

Morgan believes the offence deserved a heavier punishment, saying: "I am a little bit surprised. There are a few things in our game that are heavily forbidden – biting, gouging and kicking – but it's not something for me to make a judgement on.

"It's slightly surprising but that's the way it goes. That's the decision of the RFL. We'll just crack on with our job."

Morgan is set to name the same team that won the Hull play-off derby, with centre Jake Webster still sidelined and forward Liam Watts struggling to overcome a knee injury.

Wigan half-back Paul Deacon (groin) is rated no more than

50-50 by coach Michael Maguire to play in Friday's game.

Maguire has the option of switching either Sean O'Loughlin from loose-forward or Sam Tomkins to the stand-off role.

The latter option would mean a likely switch of Pat Richards to full-back and a recall for forgotten Australian winger Amos Roberts.
