Burgess is planning to sign off in style

South Sydney-bound Tom Burgess last night spoke of Bradford Bulls’ desire to produce something “special” before the close-knit squad potentially splits up.

The young prop, 20, has agreed a deal to link with all three of his siblings at the NRL club in 2013.

Burgess will join his twin George, England star Sam – who left Bradford almost three years ago – and former Leeds Rhinos front-row Luke.

However, with the stricken Bulls still embroiled in financial crisis, he is keen to make sure he leaves on the right note.

Despite a six-point deduction for entering administration, the West Yorkshire club could still reach the play-offs for the first time in four years.

They can draw level with Hull KR in the crucial eighth spot if they beat them in a huge Super League game at Odsal on Friday.

Burgess told the Yorkshire Post: “It’s great to get things sorted with Souths but I’ve still got a job to do here with Bradford.

“We’ve talked about it as a team that we want to do something really special if this is maybe the last year we do spend together.

“We know how big a game Friday night is but we’re all very confident we can get in the top eight and then make some waves.”

Burgess insists he was contemplating making the switch to Australia before Bradford’s money problems hit their peak.

His contract is up at the end of the season and, having turned down the chance to join Souths with George two years ago, he knows now is the right time.

“The four of us have always talked about how it’d be great to one day all play together in the same side,” he said.

“Maybe we will now with Souths but I know it will be tough down there. They’ve all told me it’s a fight every week to get a spot and I’m sure I’ll actually be fighting my brothers for a place.

“But I’m looking forward to the challenge of proving myself there .

“They are all chuffed I’m going. I’ve no regrets as I’ve played some good rugby at Bradford and got close to 50 senior games which is a great experience. But I do miss them and knew I’d end up going at the end of this three-year deal.”

Bradford are still waiting to hear whether administrator Brendan Guilfoyle has accepted Super League Europe’s bid for the club.

If he does, their players are likely to instantly be allowed to speak to other clubs to help sort their futures. Bulls’ Super League place cannot be guaranteed and many of their players believe the four-times champions will operate in the Championship next term.

Hull FC’s Joe Westerman faces a two-match ban after being charged with a reckless high tackle on Wigan’s Epalahame Lauaki.

Wakefield Trinity’ Dean Collis could receive the same after being charged with a dangerous throw on Castleford’s Stuart Jones.

Widnes hooker Paul McShane, on loan from Leeds, might miss Friday’s return to his parent club as he faces a forearm charge.
