Castleford sign winger Williams on loan from Wolves

The 22-year-old winger is set to make his Tigers debut in the opening game of Magic Weekend at Manchester’s Etihad Stadium on Saturday against Wakefield, the side he faced just three days ago for the Wolves.

“I haven’t been getting as much first team-rugby as I’d like at Warrington and hopefully I’ll be playing at the weekend if I impress in training here,” he said. “If I do play, I’ll be more prepared than the other lads. I’m looking forward to it.”

Williams, who has scored 10 tries in 12 appearances for Wales, played six Super League matches on loan to Crusaders last season and has made five appearances for Warrington so far this year.

Castleford coach Ian Millward said: “I’ve brought Rhys in because we are short on outside backs and we haven’t been consistent in that area.

“It is not often at this stage in the season that you can pick up a talent like Rhys and I’m looking forward to his involvement in the coming month.

“He’s always been a player of outstanding natural ability and he played very strong against Wakefield at the weekend. He comes with speed and also a great desire to get his hands on the ball.”

Sheffield Eagles centre Misi Taulapapa is banned for tonight’s Co-operative Championship game with Batley Bulldogs.

Tualapapa was suspended for one game after he pleaded guilty to punching in Sheffield’s match against York City Knights on May 10, but Jack Howieson is free to play after avoiding suspension for the same offence.

The two coaches, Mark Aston and John Kear, were part of the Eagles’ giantkilling Challenge Cup team which beat Wigan at Wembley.

Batley coach Kear is full of praise for his former player Aston, who helped rescue the Eagles from oblivion after their ill-fated merger with Huddersfield.

“Mark’s absolutely first class,” said Kear.

“Sheffield have been like the phoenix from the ashes, and Mark’s been instrumental in the rebirth and growth of the club.

“He’s taken them to a Grand Final last year, and they’re built on very secure foundations.

“He’s done absolutely marvelously, and you can tell his team is a Mark Aston team because they exhibit plenty of the same qualities that Mark had as a player,” he said.

Johnny Walker and Jonny Campbell are fit for Batley in a game that could see the Bulldogs leap to the top of the table.
