Castleford Tigers 16 Warrington Wolves 28: Widders faces knee surgery after Castleford defeat

CASTLEFORD back-rower Dean Widders is to undergo surgery after suffering a knee injury in Saturday's Engage Super League loss to Warrington.

The Tigers are still to learn the full extent of the 30-year-old former South Sydney forward's problem but coach Terry Matterson admits an operation will be necessary.

Matterson said: "It hasn't come up too good. He has got to go in on Monday and he will be operated on during the week.

"We won't know how serious until they have a look but it is not going to be season-ending.

"Hopefully we are looking at three to six weeks."

On the positive side, Matterson revealed forward Paul Jackson was not seriously hurt following his collision with Warrington's Garreth Carvell early in the match.

He said: "He is all right. We copped a few knocks tonight, Brent Sherwin copped one as well, but they will be fine."

Richie Myler claimed two late tries as Warrington wore down Castleford.

The Wolves, scorers of 11 tries against Harlequins last week, found the going tougher on a wet evening at The Jungle but two mistakes allowed them to recover from 14-10 down.

Stand-off Lee Briers turned the tide with an interception try before new signing Myler seized on a loose ball to touch down and later added another.

Warrington had trailed 10-0 after early Cas tries from James Evans and Joe Westerman but were level at the break following a Simon Grix score and Chris Riley's sixth of the season.

A second Evans try gave Cas hope of following up their stunning opening day defeat over Leeds but Warrington finished strongly.

Warrington coach Tony Smith believes Myler will enjoy a prolific season as he settles in with the Wolves.

Smith said: "He is a good boy, he will score plenty of tries this year.

"He is an opportunist, but a bit more than that, and he is fitting in well with our boys.

"He is starting to understand all our players a bit better. He is still finding his feet but coming along nicely."

Smith added: "We got our act together in the second half, we were pretty disappointed with our first half.

"We gave away four penalties in the first seven minutes of the game. That lets the opposition out of their half and takes a bit of out of your tank of petrol.

"We were pretty ordinary with the ball because of that but we grafted our way back in there and in the second half we were a lot better."

Tigers coach Matterson added: "I think we gave them a bit too much all game.

"I thought our effort was good and there were big periods when we looked really good.

"In the first half we looked the stronger at some stage but we gifted them two tries from kicks.

"Then in the second half they scored from an intercept and a dropped ball and we just didn't create enough pressure.

"At the end of the day we weren't the best side on the night. I don't think we defended bad enough to concede 28 points but you have to give the opposition credit, they took their opportunities."
