Catalans Dragons v Doncaster: We are happy to be the underdogs in Perpignan, says Ryan Boyle

DONCASTER prop Ryan Boyle says his side will relish being the underdogs as the League 1 part-timers face Challenge Cup holders Catalans Dragons in Perpignan today.

The former Castleford Tigers and Halifax forward is one of the few players in Richard Horne’s side who have experienced playing in Perpignan.

Most had to take time off work yesterday ready to board the flight but Boyle says they will all make the most of the unlikely opportunity.

“We know it’s going to be a tough game, of course we do,” said the 31-year-old.

“But it’s about the experience as well coming to Perpignan and playing here.

“I’ve been lucky to come a few times but for plenty it’s the first time here and for some it will be the last as well.

“It’s all about Doncaster and representing the club well while going out and making an impact as well.”

Leeds-born Boyle added: “We’ll be massive underdogs and we know how big and physical Catalans are.

“But we don’t mind that. We were underdogs in the last round and beat Batley from the division above.

“We kept turning up for each other in that game and defending our line.

“I know we’ll have to do the same again and it’ll be quicker again.

“But if we can still be in it at half-time they might start to panic.

“There’s always a shock in every round so who knows but we just want to do ourselves proud.”

On his own record at Stade Gilbert Brutus, the Ireland international said: “It’s been mixed.

“I’ve been here and had some good wins. I remember coming with Salford Red Devils and Jodie Broughton - who may be making his comeback for Catalans on Saturday - scored four tries for us back in 2011.

“But then one of my last games for Castleford was on Easter Monday in 2016.

“We’d come in off a good win over Leeds on the Thursday but then got heavily beaten in Perpignan.

“The fans are great over here, though, and it’s always a quality atmosphere.

“It was an early start for us Friday morning - most of us were up at 5am - but we’ll be ready to go.”
