The Australian, who has been in terrific form with 10 tries in his last six matches, suffered the injury during Friday’s win against Wigan Warriors.

Hitchcox, who had been told he can leave at the end of the season, gave an update on his condition via social media yesterday.

He Tweeted: “Scans come back with a muscle torn from the bone and two small fractures at the base of my spine.

“Gutted I may have played my last game in a tigers shirt but rest assured I will do everything I can to get myself back fit and do all I can to wear the shirt one more time.”

Ex-Featherstone Rovers star Hitchcox, 28, is expected to join Bradford Bulls in 2019.

His injury could see Tuoyo Egodo, the 21-year-old who came on against Wigan, gain his first start of the season when Castleford face Catalans in Perpignan on Saturday.
