Danny Brough rues '˜worst attempt' of career as Huddersfield Giants hit back

HUDDERSFIELD GIANTS' Danny Brough described his failed drop goal attempt at Wigan Warriors as the 'worst' such kick of his distinguished career.

The Scotland captain, having already slotted four goals in Sunday’s Super League game, had a glorious chance to beat the World Club champions when he lined up a late one-pointer.

However, the experienced stand-off badly miscued and the game was left level at 16-16.

Brough, 34, has been “advised” not to comment about a national newspaper report claiming he has had a fall-out with Giants head coach Rick Stone and that the Wigan game was set to be his last for the West Yorkshire club.

Both Stone and Huddersfield managing director Richard Thewlis have dismissed that while the player’s wife, Jenna, also added on Twitter the couple knew nothing of it. Thewlis said the matter has been passed onto the club’s lawyers given the article’s “damaging” nature, but Brough was happy to speak to The Yorkshire Post about the game.

The 2013 Man of Steel said: “It was probably a point that got away. I missed a drop goal with about a minute and a half to go. It was probably the worst attempt of my career. But, to get a point, even though Wigan had five players missing, was a good result.

“We showed a bit of character and certainly played better than the previous week.”

Huddersfield had been reeling from an embarrassing 30-0 loss at Leigh Centurions the week before, having also been vanquished 48-4 at home to Hull FC previously.

However, they avoided a third successive defeat and ended champions Wigan’s 100 per cent winning start to the campaign.

“It’d have been hard not to improve after what we did at Leigh, but the lads stuck together and stayed strong,” said Brough, Leeds Rhinos visiting next on Friday.

“We were under the pump at times and made some great last-ditch tackles. We’re used to Leeds as champions so we always raise our game against them. They are a quality team. They had one blip at Castleford, but that’s well behind them after they beat Catalans then Wakefield last Friday.”

Brough’s third goal at Wigan took him to 3,446 career points, replacing Leeds legend Lewis Jones in ninth place in the all-time points-scoring list.

The former Wakefield star admitted: “I was pleased. Hopefully I can keep climbing that table and if I get into the top five by the time I retire I’ll be really pleased.”
