Demetriou wants to make Trinity opener

Wakefield Trinity: Wildcats captain Jason Demetriou is confident of being fit for the start of the new Super League season.

The loose forward has been given the all-clear to start running again after knee surgery during the winter.

"I can now get stuck straight in and I need to get my fitness up quickly," he said. "I know I need to work hard to be ready for the season start and will do everything I can to make it."

Demetriou aims to play in the friendly at Hunslet on January 24 with a view to making the Wildcats' opener at Harlequins six days later.

"If I can make the Hunslet game and play well there then I can put my hand up to make the first game," he said. "But all that will be up to coach John Kear. He'll have the final say."
