Dewsbury Rams 16 Workington Town 18: Late try cruel blow for struggling Dewsbury

Workington Town staged a dramatic smash-and-grab on Dewsbury Rams with a try in the final seconds of the game courtesy of full-back Brett Carter, who also converted to condemn the home side to their sixth consecutive league defeat.

Glenn Morrison’s side were leading 16-6 at half-time and dominated the opening exchanges. But they failed to turn all that possession into points which in the end cost them.

Workington grabbed the first try of the game through centre Jason Mossop, which Carter improved with a goal but that was to be the visitors’ only points of the half as the Rams gained momentum when James Donaldson went over on 28 minutes.

Lucas Walshaw touched down after good work by Kieran Hyde on his home debut and he turned from provider to try-scorer sneaking over on the hooter for one of his own from the base of the scrum. Bobbie Goulding tagged on the extras to both tries for a 16-6 advantage to the Rams at the interval.

The second half saw numerous chances blown to extend the lead with the best opportunities falling to Aaron Brown and James Craven, but neither could get the ball over the line.

Instead, Workington kept the Rams scoreless and Jamie Acton’s try narrowed the advantage with Carter adding another two points as both teams kept testing each other’s defence with some good attacking rugby.

It was Dewsbury’s defence which cracked in the final minute as Carter found the gap to dart under the posts and score.

The easy conversion ensured Workington took the points back to Cumbria and the Rams were forced to settle for a bonus point.
