Dewsbury Rams 20 Sheffield Eagles 22: Dewsbury in despair as Stringer grabs win for Sheffield

Mitchell Stringer landed a dramatic last-gasp penalty to snatch victory for Sheffield Eagles at Tetleys Stadium last night.

Dewsbury Rams battled back from 20-16 down and when Bryn Powell stormed over for a try in the 75th minute the Rams had a golden opportunity to register their first win in the Championship. Pat Walker stepped up for the conversion attempt but pulled it across the face of goal.

In a dramatic finale both sides had chances to win it but failed with drop-goal attempts before Sheffield were gifted victory.

Rams' full-back Lee Lingard dropped a pass inside his own 25 and then hacked the ball away in frustration. Referee Ronnie Laughton awarded the Eagles a penalty which Stringer slotted over.

Sheffield raced into a 10-0 lead in the opening stages as Craig Cook darted over in the corner before Stringer crashed through the Rams' defence to score; he also added a conversion.

Ed Barber replied with a try for the Rams only for Dave McDonald to burst through to put Sheffield 14-4 ahead.

Substitute James Lockwood responded in style with a try near the end of the first half which Pat Walker converted before Andy Bostock barged over soon after the interval and Walker edged Dewsbury ahead with a conversion.

Cook replied with his 15th try of the season for the Eagles and Stringer's conversion put the visitors 20-16 ahead.

Powell looked to have earned Dewsbury at least a share of the spoils with his late unconverted try but Stringer's penalty ultimately denied them.

Leeds full-back Brent Webb last night lost his appeal against a two-match suspension so he will miss Sunday's derby against Bradford and the Challenge Cup quarter-final with Wigan.
