Dewsbury Rams 38 Swinton Lions 44: Dewsbury fall short in fight back as Lions progress

Championhip One league leaders Swinton Lions roared into the next round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup by knocking out Dewsbury Rams in a match that had all the thrills and spills of a classic.

Swinton Lions, who came into the game 10 matches unbeaten in all competitions, had Dewsbury on the back foot from the word go and scorched into an 18-0 lead thanks to tries from Ian Mort, Richard Flooks and Gavin Dodd. Mort goaled all three tries and the home side looked in trouble.

The Rams hit back with some strong running from Keegan Hirst and Luke Menzies whilst Dominic Brambani was the catalyst for a Dewsbury comeback. Tries from Pat Walker and Brambani narrowed the score and when Austin Buchanan went in things were level.

Tommy Gallagher and Rob Spicer exchanged tries as the sides went in 24-24 at the interval.

Brambani notched two penalty goals but the away side were too strong in the second half as Phil Joesph grabbed a brace of tries and Mort was perfect with the boot.

A scuffle late on saw three players sent to cool off and with a man advantage Dewsbury showed desire to come back with Brambani and Buchanan both going in for their second of the game. Elliot Cosgrove was held up over the line on the hooter to end a dramatic game that saw Warren Jowitt’s side dumped out of the cup.
