Dobson left fuming at Child's play after Saints shocker

ALTHOUGH Hull KR coach Justin Morgan had to choose his words wisely when asked about referee James Child's performance in their 68-12 loss against St Helens, scrum-half Michael Dobson was a little more forthcoming.

Morgan was fined 4,000 by the RFL after an outburst against Ben Thaler last season, half of it still suspended, so refused to be drawn into questions after his vanquished side were reduced to 11 men following two contentious yellow cards issued by Child on Friday night.

Rovers were caned in the penalty count as they fell to a 26-6 interval deficit and also saw a 'score' from Dobson ruled out by video referee Thaler when they were 6-4 ahead.

Those sin-binnings to Ben Cockayne and Ben Fisher towards the end of the first half then came back to haunt them as ruthless Saints piled pressure on tired bodies after the break.

"We didn't get any favours from anyone," admitted Dobson.

"With a bounce of the ball it could have been a totally different story.

"We started off all right but through a bit of our own fault and also the referee I thought we got played out of the game," he said.

"Our discipline wasn't great but you could probably question the two sending-offs and I think it's got to be a bit more consistent.

"Our defence wasn't the best but again, we were defending the whole match, so you can't expect to be in the game when you're defending like that.

"We had too many sets, there was some questionable video referee decisions too and it was a tough day at the office but we've got to re-group."

Rovers' coach broke down en route to the match on the M62 near Saddleworth Moor.

They only arrived after a group of fans gave up their mini-bus to allow the stranded squad to continue instead of waiting for a replacement.

But they finished on the end of a St Helens hammering for the second time in three weeks after being thrashed 54-0 at Murrayfield and remain rooted in eighth spot.

The East Yorkshire club's season of mixed fortunes continues – they defeated St Helens and high-flying Warrington at Craven Park and also beat champions Leeds only to lose to Catalans and Wakefield – but Dobson remains confident they will find consistency.

"I think we'll be fine and we've shown that we can bounce back," said the Australian, after helping Rovers to a 54-10 success over Crusaders following their previous Saints aberration

Dobson, who created both tries for Kris Welham and Clint Newton with neat kicks on Friday, adding both conversions, believes they can secure a place in the play-offs for a second consecutive year.

"Hopefully we can get up to Saints' level by the end of the season and be challenging them," he said.

"Maybe we'll get a re-match but with a different scoreline.

"We've got Catalans at home in a couple of weeks and need to bounce back and get on a roll.

"Hopefully the bounce of the ball goes our way next time," he added.
