Dominant Leigh wary of Featherstone

If they can defeat Featherstone Rovers in tomorrow night’s Championship Grand Final it will cap a campaign that has been more dominant than any rival’s in recent history.

Remarkably, ruthless Leigh have won 30 of their 32 games in 2014, often proving unplayable with their stellar brand of football, combining power and pace with real ingenuity and flair.

The only side to defeat them in the Championship on the way to the League Leaders’ Shield was Doncaster in July.

Their only other defeat came at the hands of eventual Challenge Cup winners Leeds Rhinos, but even that came after a pulsating quarter-final tie at the home of the Super League giants.

However, for all of their richly-deserved plaudits, ex-Halifax hooker Rowley knows they still have their most important work yet to do.

They finished 15 points ahead of tomorrow’s opponents at Headingley but, he warned: “Featherstone have been the team to beat for nearly half a decade.

“If you look at their personnel on paper they’ve got an embarrassment of riches.

“We’d never dare to underestimate them, not a chance. They are a very, very good team.”

Leigh will be mindful Rovers had finished top in each of the previous four seasons yet only won a Grand Final once in that period.

Leigh, meanwhile, have not won a Grand Final themselves since beating Whitehaven in 2004.
