Doncaster 10 Wakefield Trinity 50: Second-half revival ends Doncaster’s hopes against Kear’s Trinity

Wakefield cruised into the fifth round of the Challenge Cup with a comfortable win over Doncaster at the Keepmoat Stadium.

John Kear’s team overcame their Co-operative Championship One opponents with a solid performance in which they ran away with the game in the final half an hour.

A penalty allowed Wakefield to set up camp deep in Doncaster territory and Kyle Amor danced his way through a static defence to touch down after seven minutes. Josh Veivers missed the conversion.

Wakefield maintained their dominance and added a second try when raids from Frankie Mariano, Stuart Howarth and Tommy Lee set up good field position for Kieran Hyde to launch a cross-field kick that was collected and touched down by Josh Griffin on the wing. Veivers converted.

Wakefield were threatening to run away with the game but Doncaster’s spirit and a loss of discipline from the Wildcats culminated in Scott Spaven breaking through to make it 10-4.

The visitors suffered a ragged spell in which they promised to concede more points but they finally regained control on the half-hour when Aaron Murphy burst through from centre to score a Veivers-improved try.

Doncaster gifted Wakefield a penalty on the half-time hooter and Veivers converted to put his team 18-4 ahead.

Passes between Mick Butterfield and Kyle Kesik sent winger Stewart Sanderson over for the Dons, Aaron Dobek converting to cut the deficit to eight points.

But Trinity hit back when Kevin Henderson collected another cross-field kick from Hyde to bag an unconverted try.

The score marked the beginning of a commanding spell from Wakefield as they ran in another five tries before the end of the game via Griffin, Dale Morton, Chris Dean, Veivers and Hyde.

Trinity coach John Kear said: “I would like to compliment Doncaster. They turned up and put a massive effort in.”
