Doncaster 34 Sheffield Eagles 20: Miller ends on high as Sheffield finish second

TWO tries apiece from Dave Scott and Kyle Trout ensured retiring Doncaster coach Tony Miller finished his final Championship league match in charge on a triumphant note.

It was the first time Doncaster had beaten South Yorkshire rivals Sheffield for four years and meant they earned a home tie against Dewsbury in the top-eight play-offs while Sheffield will entertain Halifax.

The Eagles’ defeat at Featherstone which dislodged them from the top spot last week seemed to take the edge off their performance but nothing could detract from an excellent Doncaster display.

A superb long pass from Paul Cooke put Scott over in the corner for the first try in the 12th minute and Trout took advantage of some sloppy Sheffield defending to notch the second a couple of minutes later.

Eagles finally got their act together when Menzie Yere raced through following a slick passing move in the 19th minute and then Vinny Finnigan found a gap on the outside to level the scores four minutes later.

But Doncaster always looked the better side and Scott restored their lead after 27 minutes following good work by Cooke and Lee Waterman.

A splendid individual try from Waterman put Doncaster 20-10 up before Yere touched down again to equal the Eagles’ club record of 114 career tries.

Defences were on top at the start of the second half before Doncaster broke the deadlock when Stu Sanderson raced through in the 62nd minute and then Trout put the issue beyond doubt six minutes later.

Full-back Quentin Laula-Togagae scored a late try for Sheffield – who finished second behind Featherstone – but the honours deservedly went to Doncaster following an excellent team display.
