Doncaster progress to Cup semi-finals

DONCASTER eased into the Northern Rail Cup semi-finals last night with a comprehensive win over Swinton Lions.

Tony Miller’s side followed up Sunday’s impressive shock victory at Championship leaders Featherstone Rovers with another stellar showing.

They quickly built up an unassailable lead, racing into an 18-0 advantage after only 24 minutes.

Chris Spurr crossed inside four minutes and dual-registration Wakefield Trinity Wildcats second-row Danny Cowling added another soon after.

When Stewart Sanderson added Doncaster’s third try in the 24th minute, adding the third of his six successful conversions, the South Yorkshire side were well on their way to the last four.

Swinton responded with tries from Gene Ormsby and another via Craig Harvey just before the break to leave them trailing 18-8 at the turnaround.

When Matt Sarsfield cut the deficit further just five minutes into the second period, Harvey converting, Doncaster could easily have stumbled.

However, the visitors, who had Russ Spiers back in their ranks on the bench after rejoining from Dewsbury Rams, showed plenty of composure to steady their nerves and regain control.

Lee Waterman got over just before the hour mark and, though Swinton pushed hard, they could not break down Doncaster again.

Ex-Featherstone half-back Craig Fawcett got in on the act in the 64th minute before Mike Emmett rounded things off eight minutes from time to put themselves in Sunday’s draw for the semi-final pairings.
