A dying craft Down Under

Ironically, there is concern the 40/20 tactic is dying out in the NRL given rule changes brought in this season.

Teams which kick the ball dead – which can easily happen if a 40/20 goes wrong – now see the opposition restart play on zero tackle at the 20m line.

That initiative, coupled with an increase in the speed of the ruck, means most teams would roll well past the 40m line midway through their set.

That would usually negate any desire to take the chance of a 40/20 kick when they might instead finish their set close to the opposition line with an attacking one.

Furthermore, another alteration to the 40/20 means an attacking team can take a quick tap re-start rather than waiting to form a scrum.
