Emotional investment persuades Galea to stay with Hull KR

HULL KR have secured the services of one of their most influential players with Australian forward Ben Galea agreeing a new one-year deal at Craven Park.

The 31-year-old joined the Robins in 2008 from Wests Tigers and has been a key figure ever since, sweeping the board at the club's player of the year awards in his debut season and making last season's Super League Dream Team.

His decision to remain with the club until the end of 2011 comes a day after Jake Webster committed his future to Justin Morgan's men, and Galea was happy to follow his team-mate's lead.

"It has been a drawn-out process but I am delighted to have got things sorted out," he said.

"Ideally I would have liked to have got something sorted out this time last year but it didn't work out that way.

"I'm putting that behind me now, though, and looking forward to the rest of the year."

Although he was offered two-year contracts by two other Super League clubs, Galea admits the loyalty he feels towards Rovers was enough to persuade him to take a shorter deal and stay in East Yorkshire.

"I was offered two years but I have put a lot of emotion into this club and that's a large part of the reason I have stayed," he said.

"I have made a big investment of three years here and it would be a shame to walk away. I want to win titles and that sort of stuff."

Rovers' derby with Hull FC has been brought forward 24 hours next month.

The encounter at KC Stadium due to take place on Friday, July 16, will now kick off on the Thursday at 8pm after Sky TV requested the eagerly-anticipated contest be televised.

Sheffield Eagles forward Alex Szostak (knee) faces a late fitness test before tonight's game with Barrow Raiders but Jonny Woodcock and Ashley Thackeray remain sidelined.

Sheffield have not played since their 24-14 victory at Whitehaven 10 days ago but with only seven games left to secure their Co-operative Championship play-off place, coach Mark Aston is keen to get back to action.

"We have a testing few weeks ahead," he said. "It's a time for looking forward, learning from our mistakes and being positive.

"We're still very much in the mix-up for the Championship play-offs."
