England’s back three can be best in world, says Briscoe

Tom Briscoe believes England’s exciting back-three combination can become the sport’s finest.

The Hull FC winger, 21, has yet to score in the Gillette Four Nations ahead of tomorrow night’s do-or-die fixture against New Zealand which takes place on his home ground.

However, there is no denying the quality of his performances alongside Leeds Rhinos winger Ryan Hall, 23, and the elusive full-back Sam Tomkins, 22, a talented trio which is expected to be the backbone of the national side for years to come.

Briscoe is setting high standards, saying: “We’re looking forward towards the 2013 World Cup and beyond.

“With us being so young, we can build up a strong back three and be the best in the world. That’s the aim at the end of the day.”

While Hall scored two spectacular tries in defeat against Australia at Wembley last week, Tomkins proving a catalyst in plenty of England’s best attacks, Briscoe was left disappointed by the one he had wrongly disallowed.

But, as he collects his 11th cap tomorrow, in a game England must win to reach the Elland Road final against Australia next Saturday, he is hoping more play will now come down his left-hand side with Hull centre colleague Kirk Yeaman.

“I’d love to get a bit more ball,” he admitted, with coach Steve McNamara expected to delay naming his squad until shortly before kick-off in a bid to give Gareth Ellis, Jamie Peacock and James Graham as long as possible to recover from injury.

“Me and Kirk have done pretty well between the two of us with what ball we’ve had and it would be nice to get a bit more, especially with it being at the KC.

“We can take confidence from Saturday though. At times we showed we’re not far behind them (Australia).

“It was just one-on-one mistakes that cost us really and in big games you can’t afford to be making errors like that.

“I think the Kiwis will be very physical as always but hopefully, if we can fix up our mistakes, we should be able to get a win.”
