Farm walks aim to spread the message on wildlife

WAYS in which farmers can promote wildlife while running a viable farming business will be explored with two free farming events this week.

The Campaign for the Farmed Environment (CFE), a three-year voluntary initiative to encourage farmers to manage their land for the benefit of the environment, is to organise two farm walks to give people practical first hand advice on how to get involved.

There are a range of voluntary management measures or Environmental Stewardship options that can be adopted to benefit the environment, whilst at the same time aiming to fit in with a viable farm business.

The first farm walk is on Monday, May 24 at one of the region's CFE beacon farms, Hutton Grange near Northallerton, hosted by Stephen Tuer.

The second takes place at Ivy House Farm near Doncaster two days later with NFU stalwart Russell Toothill.

Mr Tuer's farm has never participated in any type of agri-environment scheme, but Mr Tuer is now planning to join the Environmental Stewardship Entry Level Scheme (ELS).

Both events will start at 6pm. The dates and venues are as follows:

May 24 – Hutton Grange, Hutton Bonville, Northallerton.

May 26 – Ivy House Farm, Eastfield Lane, Auckley, Doncaster.
