Farrell is banned for encounter with Rhinos

Wigan will be without forward Liam Farrell for Saturday’s Super League game against champions Leeds Rhinos at the DW Stadium through suspension.

The back-row chose to make an early guilty plea after being charged with a dangerous tackle on Huddersfield centre Leroy Cudjoe during his side’s opening 20-16 defeat on Sunday and was handed a one-match ban.

Farrell, who was also given a caution for use of the forearm on Huddersfield hooker Luke Robinson in the same match, became the first player to accept an early guilty plea, thereby removing the need for a disciplinary hearing.

Veteran stand-off Lee Briers is poised to return to the Warrington team after serving his punishment for a breach of club discipline.

The 33-year-old former Wales international was dropped for the Wolves’ opening match at Hull on Sunday for what coach Tony Smith called “a breach of protocol”.

But Smith confirmed Briers, the club’s longest-serving player and record points-scorer, would be available to face London Broncos on Sunday.

“It was a breach of protocol in terms of preparation,” said Smith. “That’s as far as we want to go. You can speculate on the rest. The players have set themselves some pretty high levels.”
